Across the United States, a rising wave of anti-science legislation is targeting long-established public health protections. More than 420 bills have been introduced across multiple states, challenging regulations that have existed for decades—including those related to vaccinations, milk safety, and fluoride in drinking water.
Anti-Vaccine Bills Lead the Movement
Among these proposals, anti-vaccine bills are the most common. Public health experts warn that weakening vaccine requirements could have serious consequences for population health.

This year, three children died from measles following an outbreak.
Influenza-related deaths have also increased nationwide.
These outcomes highlight the danger of reducing protections that once kept such diseases under control.
Why Herd Immunity Matters
Vaccination is most effective when the majority of the population is immunized. While vaccines provide strong protection, no vaccine is 100% effective. That means even vaccinated individuals remain at risk when surrounded by unvaccinated populations.
This principle—known as herd immunity—is critical for preventing disease spread, protecting vulnerable individuals, and maintaining community health.
